Copywriter, Coast 2 Coast, LA to Chicago...
I grew up an outsider. Our community—the south- and westsides of Chicago was often dismissed as "the hood". People rarely listened to us.
So for me, survival became about listening to everyone else. Understanding dos and don'ts, wills and won'ts, wants and needs. And it's that last one—the wants and needs—that got me into advertising.
Listening and people watching got me to see what people liked buying and why. Next, I started writing to what I heard.
After a while, the writing turned into headlines, and body copy, and taglines, and strategy statements, and scripts, events, and music, and a portfolio...
And then a job.
And then some big clients. And then some cool work. And then another job with more big clients. And some awards. And then some more jobs...
Along the way, I worked on Absolut, Aleve, Allied Domecq, Auxilio, Inc., AT+T, Bayer, Bailey’s Cream, Bank Of America, Cleveland Clinic, Coca-Cola, Diageo, Dominick’s Finer Foods, Ford Motors, Gillette, Glaxo-Smith Kline, Kraft Finer Foods, Infiniti Motors, Logan Advertising Group, Lowe's Home Improvement, Mass Mutual, Mercedes Benz, Nationwide Insurance, Nissan Motors, PNC Bank, Radio Shack, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame + Museum, John G. These days, I'm still listening. Still writing to what I hear. Still making music out of it all.
